Twin brothers, JC and Jacus Aucamp, have founded Salon Sustainability – a UK-based comprehensive waste recovery programme, designed to recycle up to 95% of salon waste including aluminium foils, colour tubes, hair, plastic and paper.

Knowing that foil takes 400 years to biodegrade, JC and Jacus have made it their mission to ensure that they are now in a position to recycle foil so that it can be used time and time again. Metal can also be reconfigured for an endless life. Plastic can be recycled into granules in order that they can enter their second life cycle. Even hair can be made into Hair Mats, proven to be effective in absorbing petroleum oil from contaminated coastlines. “Both of us have always been amazed and shocked at the amount of waste produced by salons,” comment the twins. “There had to be a way to recycle it all, especially after doing highlight after highlight and hair cuts and it all ending up in landfills causing greenhouse gases.”

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Once you join Salon Sustainability, you will receive a salon registration kit containing everything you need to become a sustainable salon. This will enable you to recycle all hair, paper, colour tubes, foil and metal styling cans. You will also feature on the Salon Sustainability store locator and receive supportive PR and marketing material. All you need to do to get started is order your chosen recycling bins and returns box. Just ensure hair, paper, colour tubes, foil and metal are packed separately into the biodegradable bags provided. These are then packed into the returns box. Once your returns box is full, contact Salon Sustainability to arrange collection.

Additionally, In light of the current climate, the duo has been able to include a PPE recovery initiative to ensure that masks, gloves, biodegradable towels, wipes and paper towels can be responsibly disposed of and used to make renewable energy. All profits from recycling will be donated to Hair & Beauty Benevolent. In order for this programme to be recognised by clients and the general public, J C Aucamp, Director of the award-winning Guy Kremer salon, Lymington, has given the opportunity to each client to support the initiative with an additional green fee of £1 on their bill.

Salon Sustainability is available to all hair and beauty salons and spas throughout the UK and soon Ireland.
